Introduction

I qualified as a Midwife in 2010 and since then have worked in all areas of NHS Midwifery developing a good understanding of what is required of a Midwife working in each area. I have a special interest in training, education and supporting students and junior midwives and currently work as a Practice Development Midwife, since 2022. I have a good working knowledge of what training is expected of a Midwife and what CPD is available for them to attend, as well as having a good understanding of what Maternity Incentive Scheme (MIS), Care Quality Commission (CQC) and NHS England require of trusts with regards to mandatory training and development, as well as what the NMC expect of all student placement areas.

Most of my recent clinical experience has been primarily within the community, homebirth and birth centre environments, although as a member of the clinical leaders team I also manage the maternity unit one day per week so have a really good understanding of how the maternity unit functions as a whole as well as changes in local and national policies across all areas of Midwifery. I also work bank shifts in different areas of the maternity service to keep my skills up to date. My expertise would cover both low and high risk settings, in identifying issues with training and/or midwifery management/provision, particularly in low risk labour care and care in the community.

I have been involved in investigations in an investigating capacity, as a witness and also to support other members of staff in both small investigations (e.g. investigating incident forms) and larger ones such is HSIB (now MNSI) and coroners court. I currently line manage all of the newly qualified midwives in the trust I work at, which has given me a great insight into the development needs of junior staff and what support needs are and should be available to them.

I also have a private business teaching antenatal classes, as I believe wholeheartedly in informed choice and patients understanding their options and being involved in the decisions about their care, and this service isn't currently available on the NHS in the location I live.

I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
